Sure I am aware 'Divide' was featured on Waves At Night only a few weeks ago, however I figure there's no harm done in backing local talent.

P.C.P. is one of the many aliases of the multi-talented Luke Brown.

Luke is a Producer, DJ, Graphics Designer and Lecturer based in Melbourne.

As a DJ he is one half of Negativ Magick (alongside Thomas Henderson) and one half Leslie Salvador (alongside Ricardo Ramos).

Anyway, Industrial, Nu-Wave, Dark Dance… whatever you want to call it, I like this track! Not sure if anything is in the works as to an official release but you can keep up to date with any news / info with the links below.

I met Serhan at the Pete Rock show earlier this year on NYD, and we ended up at Revolver with ma man Eddie Mac. Needless to say, proceedings got a little messy right, and talk gravitated towards all things fuzz, psych and most importantly Turkish!

I told the man that I was into dudes like Baris Manco, Erkin Koray and Ozdemir Erdogan. He then told me he had a bunch of dusty Turkish 45s, which he's collected over the years and occasionally plays out. Here are a few of his mixes. They're on point. Oh my...what horrid and despicable and un-Godly music... one would say if they were a dim witted fool. The music is unadulterated, uncompromising and raw. Just how I like it!

The leader of the group, Masaya Nakahara commands control as he sails the music into seas of lo-fi fuzz, vocal mutterings and ramblings of someone possessed, broken beats and stabs, off kilter synth arrangements and other weird, left of centre noise-scapes. The EP traverses 80s electro style drum programming, gritty guitar licks while maintaining atmospheric undertones.

Cool stuff.

The three track EP was released a wee while back in 96' on Polystar. The combined length of the first and last track is 45 minutes, the middle track 'Gokart Chanpion' is obliviously their radio edit clocking in around the 3 minute mark ha hah ha.

For those unfamiliar Hey Convict! are a dj duo consisting of Tamas Jones & Jason Evens. Whist both from the land down under the duo are doing it long-distance with Tamas currently residing in Sydney, whilst Jason in NYC; so it is always a treat when the two get together on a project.

Nu Groove Mix by Gerd

To celebrate the upcoming release of Rush Hour's Nu Groove compilation, Gerd Janson has made us an awesome mix of his favorite Burrel Brothers tracks!

Recording under different aliases, the Burrell Brothers were the backbone of Nu Groove Records. This New York label started in 1987 and took inspiration from Trax Records, both musically and aesthetically. This compilation compiles the absolute best of the Burrell's output and in doing so is giving us a valuable insight to the much overlooked roots of New York house music.

Indie outfit Number Station are thrilled to announce the release of their first ever video clip, for Hold On, the first single from their forthcoming debut EP. The ambitious and quirky clip was filmed over 3 days last December in the house of guitarist and band co-founder Marcus Smith. Fittingly, the rambling property was also where the previous Triple J Unearthed winners wrote and recorded much of the EP, entitled Everything Will Change, from which the single is drawn.

The video was directed by Aria Award-winning director Bart Borghesi (The Living End, You Am I, Paul Dempsey, The Panics, Airbourne & many more). It all happened as I was moving in to the house and was a great experience to be a part of.

Apart from making great videos, the band are also great live. They are launching their next single "Never Go Home" at Revolver on Saturday the 25th of Feb. Quite an apt title for a Revolver gig don't you think? Anways check them out at BandCamp

Pretty cool piece of music right here...

Closer marks the resurgence of Photek after a few quiet years, this time as the 50th release on an alternative label Tectonic. Photek a.k.a. Rupert Parkes is a British born, L.A. based producer, with releases most notably under the drum n' bass genre dating back to the early 90's.

Closer sees Photek take his sound in a new direction, still resembling his origins of bass music yet with a more experimental and pop-friendly approach. Layered synths, underlining bass, and wailing vocals thrown in over the top make for a powerfully emotive sound.

From what I understand initial reviews of the single have been mixed, as is often the case when a revered artist explores new territory. I'm not much of a drum n' bass fan myself, but this certainly does it for me.

Apparently, A few months ago, the term cassette tape was taken out of the Oxford English Dictionary. Which is strange because the number of indie and chillwave bands that have the word"Cassette" or "Tape" in their band name seems to have increased tenfold.

How will their new fans know what one is?

The "mysterious CK" has done something really nice. He's made a mix based on, and influenced by DJs and producers that were name-checked in Daft Punk's classic track Teachers. And let me tell you, it's a great educational resource. !

Here's what he says about it:

"I've had an unhealthy obsession with Daft Punk since the very first time I heard 'Homework' in Tower Records the week it came out. The album blew my mind completely and then seeing their incredible live show in the Red Box a couple of months later pushed me over the edge into out-and-out fanaticism.

Trainspotter that I am, I found myself obsessively tracking down records by the artists that had influenced them. From poring over the liner notes of 'Homework' and listening over and over to their Essential Mix from 1997, I came across so many great artists people like Pepe Bradock, Moodymann, Daniel Wang and Motorbass as well as non-'dance' stuff like Can and Ween.

I discovered that the majority of their influences were from Chicago and had released tracks on labels like Cajual, Relief and Dance Mania. I loved the way they took the basic Chicago house template and mutated it into something very distinctive by incorporating elements from all over the musical spectrum - funk, rock, disco, hip hop - even Barry Manilow!

Having been exposed to so much great music by exploring Daft Punk's influences, it occurred to me that a mix of their Teachers might be interesting. I never got around to doing anything about it until this summer when I started making a shortlist of tracks. I ended up with over 300 tracks (!) and then slowly pared it down to whatever worked in terms of an actual mix.

My aim was to try and produce something in the spirit of I-F'sMixed Up In The Hague where you could tell that it was a labour of love with a lot of thought going into the track selection and the flow of the mix. Obviously that was a lofty ambition but overall I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Daft Punk have a very diverse fan base at this stage in their career and I like the idea that maybe some of their younger fans will listen to the mix and hear something like 'Acid Eiffel' for the first time."

I'm the first to admit I've been pretty well out of touch with the hip-hop world for years now…

Stumbled upon this number whilst browsing Pitchfork's Top 100 Tracks for 2011 and have been bumping it ever since. That's one of the great things about the end of a year, reading over the best of listings and catching up on anything you may have overlooked or mist.

Coastin' by Cities Aviv, instantly had me all nostalgic with it's smooth production value as well as youthfully ambitious lyrics, of one of my favorite "golden age" hip-hop acts Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf.

Originally released as a limited edition clear 7" vinyl mid last year, it has since become available to purchase in digital format from the Cities Aviv bandcamp page. Be sure to free download the Digital Lows full length album whilst you're at it; I'm yet to check that out myself.

I've always been conscious of the label, even bought the odd release, however only recently did I thoroughly do my research and come to fully appreciate the label that is Creme Organization.

Founded in the Netherlands in 2001 by DJ TLR, Creme Organization deliver intelligent and underground electronic music at it's finest. Over the past decade the label has had releases spanning the sounds of electronica, electro, italo, and more recently house and techno. A quote straight from the horses mouth, "No more tasteless designer music by and for mindless jocks and inbred consumers, but deep and RAW Jams to tear your brain back to where its at!"

It's a fine and sunny afternoon here in Melbourne, hence the following track was the inspiration for this post. 'I'm Gonna Get You' is the title track off Willie Burns' latest EP, and one of Creme Organization's more recent releases. Summer house vibes right here!

Each event will be totally different to the last dictated by that event's artist/s. All events will feature a large scale mural on outside wall lasting for three months, a one night only exhibition featuring two limited edition prints (editions of 30) and paintings on canvas. Following the event prints will then be available for sale on the DangerFork online store (if not sold out).

Big Freedia (pronounced “Free-da”) is the undisputed “Queen Diva” of Bounce. Bounce is an original urban music rising upfrom the intimate and fun-loving nature of the housing projects which dominate the city's street culture. "Sissy Bounce" is the informal name for a derivative of Bounce that has risen to prominence in recent years and features explicitly gay and cross-dressing musicians and themes. Big Freedia is at the forefront of this movement and has had several New Orleans hit singles such as "Gin in My System" and "Azz Everywhere!" from her albums "An Ha, Oh Yeah" (1999) and "Queen Diva" (2003). Freedia began her musical career almost 15 years ago at the Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans, where she was enlisted as choir director from her Sophomore to Senior years. She sees her performance as a Bounce artist as an extension of this work, often interacting in a call and response/teacher and student, fashion with her audiences. She recently developed a musical about her life entitled "Catch That Beat" with producer Lucky Johnson. The sold out first run of "Catch That Beat" featured cameo appearances by a who's who of New Orleans Bounce artists alongside the story of Freedia's upbringing in New Orleans 3rd Ward.

Fatti Frances was raised by her eccentric grandmother in Brunswick. Having drummed for bands such as Jemima Jemima, Oh! Belgium, The Ancients, Jessica Says, country outfit Nathan Hollywood, Solier has strong roots in the Melbourne music scene. After relocating to Berlin with Jemima Jemima and touring Europe and Asia playing drums for Jens Lekman, sharing stages with such luminaries as Joanna Newsom, A.I.R and Sally Seltmann. Back in Melbourne, she surrounded herself with drum machines, synthesizers and samplers to produce her debut self titled album to be released in June 2011.

During this dance class, discussions about the body movements are explained and people are encouraged to discuss such topics as feminine sexual empowerment, cultural-reciprocation, the implications of the Bounce 'beat' and how it affects individuals personally. The students are taught five different basic movements/positions. The instructor will be moving amongst the class encouraging and correcting. Students are also paired off to learn how to promote movement by clapping and verbal encouragement and by switching roles. People of ALL genders and all identities are encouraged to participate in the class. The 'pussy' is the focus of the movement, though those without a physical one will be put in touch with their own etheric 'pussy'. As part of my current obsession with all that is soulful and bass heavy coming out the UK and elsewhere, I've started to revisit some of the DnB and UK garage I was listening too in the early 00s.

One of my comps that I have found has aged really well is Jungle Jazz series shown above. Since I first picked up this comp, the stand out track for me hasn't changed.

Way back then, I loved it for its jazzy hip hop loops. Now I love it for its bottom end and genre fusion. Enjoy!

A recent discovery of mine has been Paradox.

His latest album 'Ramifications' is jazzy and packed with all sorts of famous breaks, flipped and cut into jungle madness. The track I've attached below is quite ambient in nature, but many of his others are much more dark and aggressive. It is a solid LP and I highly recommend it.

The feature track of the same name has motown soul sensibilities, early electronic drum patterns and some discrete disco references.

Kelley Polar delivers the goods with his latest single that sees him teaming up with Jeremy Greenspan of The Pet Shop Boys.

Kelley Polar aka Mike Kelly, is a classically trained violist whom incorporates elements of electronica and dance to produce his own unique take on pop music.

He also releases under the alias of Kelley Polar Quartet, and is revered for his collaborations with Morgan Geist on tracks such as Miura.

In all honesty I've never been a huge fan of his work, however this latest single is right on point.
Quite simply pop music done tastefully. Oh… and it's catchy!

With this sudden burst of rather decent weather we've been experiencing these past few days here in Melbourne, it feels like summer is slowly setting in. Having said that, ironically what was a 30 degrees fine and sunny day, now looks like a pretty serious storm is brewing, but hey that's Melbourne. As I was saying, this shift in weather has also caused a shift in my regularly played music, from the darker and moodier sounds of winter, to the lighter and simply fun sounds of summer.

Picked up this 12" a while back and haven't had a chance to play it out yet to date, surely will have many an opportunity over the coming months...

'Pass It On' by Eddie Hooper is the a-side to the first release on Soundway in 2 1/2 years apparently. For those not familiar with Soundway, it is a label that's focus is on re-releasing undiscovered and long forgotten world music, in particularly originating from Africa & Latin America.

Apparently Eddie Hooper was known largely for his Soca recordings, however this particular release represents some of his rarer tropical infused disco sounds.

Note: Couldn't find a player, nor a you-tube clip, so lucky you get the actual track.

Picked up a few choice records from arguably Melbourne's finest record store, Licorice Pie. The store stocks a mighty fine selection of independent, punk, rock, psych, prog, jazz, soul/funk, and classical records (and other genres). Not to mention the huge array of all sorts of 45s. Worth checking out, all the time. If its interesting that you like, then you'll find it there fo'sure.

A few new shipments have arrived in the store from Dave's trip to Japan. Choice records indeed. Here are a couple of cuts. The first is a tidy mid-burner by Cruisin' Gang, and second is another mid-tempo affair by Fire, Body & Ice.

I picked up this tidy release the other day from Wax Museum. Steve Summers EP is a homage to the streets of New York city circa early 80s. Think crime, grime, prostitution, dilapidation, and drugs. Then think Steve Summers and the music which embodies such images and sentiments. The EP is dope. The video clip, with its extended intro, captures the flavour of the release very well. Shit is deep!

The Psyde Projects OZ E.P Tour

Late last year The Psyde Projects went off on their first ever tour to promote their debut album, 'Welcome to Boomtown'. After their very successfulalbum launch, their hit single 'Kay-Pee-Em' got picked up by Australia's national music radio show, Triple J, received great reviews and was playedon high rotation!

This year they're set to tour nationally again to promote their second 6 track EP aptly titled 'The Psyde Projects: Volume II'. Whilst stillstaying true to the sampling culture of early hip-hop producers, this recent effort takes their sound into slightly more electronic territory.

Lounge is turning 22. Wow, what a milestone! Would have to be just about the oldest club in Melbourne, at least that's been running consecutively under the same ownership since day one. As one of Melbourne's oldest and most iconic venues, both Moonshine & myself are chuffed to be part of the venue and help Lounge in celebrating it's birthday. Here's what they have planned:

22 years in the making. Lounge has been preparing itself for this milestone event for a long time... And we don't mean we have taken our time creating the event, we mean that we have spent the last 21 years building up our family of top notch performers and DJ's, as well as the respected followers and punters that create the real vibe of the venue.

And since we forgot to celebrate our 21st birthday, something a bit special...

From a 4hr boat cruise to an after party planned for over 12 hours, this event is for the punter that grew up on the nightlife of Melbourne; the love birds that met at the venue; the clubbers that fill the dancefloor weekly; and for the historian who wants to be part of clubbing history.

Featuring almost all the Lounge resident DJ's and acts, plus the crew and staff of the venue, it will be like a house party on the water as we take you out to sea for the first time. And because it's our birthday we want to ensure that everyone gets a little silly so we be sure to take part in the dress up theme, ALL THINGS AQUATIC! Literally meaning anything related to the ocean... Come as a seagull stuck in a six pack; maybe a shark attack victim, a raver pirate from the future, or even as a shrimp cocktail.

Ess85 has travelled and lived in the industrial comlpexes that are Detroit, London and Berlin. As such these cities have undoubtedly shaped his sound which sits anywhere between hip-hop, techno and dub step.

His EP titled NEoN was released late last year, and has only come along my way now. Personally, his production stands out for me amid all the general riff raff that plagues the neo-soul-wonk-glitch-wobble genre that has become so popular over the last two years. I think the key to Ess85's originality is his layering techniques, and how he manages to bring a sense of continuity to his beat making without relying to heavily on massive effects.

The man from Kansas is now a pillar in the Chicago music scene. He has been described as "a virtual walking encyclopedia of the last 30 years of dance music" and is now at the forefront of innovative music. Great new compilation compiled from the personal music collections two widely respected diggers, Zafar Chwodhry & Mark "Goodvibes" Taylor.

Americana Rock Your Soul features 16 tracks loosely tied together by the theme AOR, or otherwise known as Adult Orientated Rock (a term I am still getting a hold on.) Anyway, the term basically refers to soft rock heavily influenced by elements of soul, jazz, funk, folk & disco.

The compilation is actually pretty varied, with some of the tracks showing very little resemblance to conventional rock music, and instead leaning more heavily towards the soul influence, at least to me anyway.

Nothing like a good compilation to fill out your music collection, comes in very handy from time to time. Pressed as a double LP, or also available on cd and digital download at selected stores.

Very sad news today.

Parisian DJ Medhi passed away last night at the young age of 34.

He was one my favourite DJs of the mid-to-late 2000s. What I loved about him was his ability to inject some soul into much of the hard-edged electro-clash that was popular at the time.

Unfortunately I never got to seem him play live.

Originally released as a 12" on the Mixed Blood Cuts imprint late last year, this two track edit package has just recently been made available for digital download. The title track 'Dancin In The Nude' holds a steady nu-disco groove and packs what sounds to me like a bit of a p-funk punch to it. The b-side 'Ciao Bella' explores slightly deeper and dubbier territory.

Revolver Upstairs, GraffixCreative and DangerFork present a new event series showcasing local and international artists at Revolver Upstairs on the first Friday of the change of Season. Each event will be totally different to the last dictated by that event's artists, featuring a large scale mural on the outside wall as well as an exhibition featuring limited edition prints & paintings on canvas. The first group of artists selected are the Royal Deviates, represented by Jors and Shem, bringing in the season of Spring. Nearing their 25th anniversary, ROCK DA CITY crew have been striving since 1987 and lifting their graffiti game to new heights. Prowla, co-designing and developing graffiti based architecture - The Hive. Jors, running Melbourne based hip hop outlet This Is It. I met this cat after he opened for us last night at The Laundry Bar. Choice cuts. After a 5 year stint in the UK and a two year hiatus from music due to work responisbilites, Tom Showtime is back and obviously, gettin' on with bizness.

His most recent release 'Space and Places' showcases the beat-makers' aptitude to create beats that are both progressive yet pay tribute to the styles of the past. The release features vocals from the a talented bunch including Gift of Gab, Lotek and Ash.One.
